What Is The Greatest Good via @TheAtlantic #learn #philosophy #give

1:00 PM 0 Comments

There are many ways to do good in this world.  Generosity and goodness can take the form of giving to charity, or something as small as listening to the tales of someone much older and wiser.

Here is a really humbling article on one person's journey to making giving a centerpiece of his daily life.

Our favorite part:

As Sam Kean explained in The Atlantic article “The Man Who Couldn't Stop Giving,”  the mainstream theory of altruism’s roots is known as “kin selection.” Since the engine of evolution is procreation, any gene pool should be rewarded for the instinct to help relatives (including distant relatives) survive and pass along their genes—even when that assistance requires great sacrifice. Altruism, in this interpretation, is natural rather than super-human. Ants, bees, and many other species show clear signs of altruism. Slime molds in the canopies of trees sacrifice themselves to strengthen the group. Even the most generous among us are chasing the self-sacrificial instincts of mold.

Interesting Results From When A Linguist Studied Blink-182 Music via @atlasobscura #learn #language #tip

1:00 PM 0 Comments

Source: IllaZilla on Wikipedia

Do we conform our language to our surroundings, or the circles that we work or socialize in?

Here's an interesting article from an author who convinced a linguistics professor to listen to a Blink-182 song, which led to analyzing the language and accents in many areas of the American music scene.

Our favorite part:

Regional dialects in English are largely informed by the particular way people in different geographic areas make their vowel sounds. Consonants can inform the sounds of vowels, but are largely static; going from an “F” sound to a “T” sound is a huge leap, whereas vowels are a little bit fluid, bleeding into each other. The entire game is to make sure you have enough difference between vowel sounds so that words can be distinguished from one another. But the specific sounds you make? Not so important, as long as they get the idea across of what word you’re trying to say.

As the technology revolution thunders ahead, the next tech piece to go is voicemail. Don't believe us? Check out this article about how much businesses have saved by ridding themselves of voicemail and moving to text-based communications.

Our favorite part:

Voice mail, it turned out, cost $10 per person per month and, intuitively, it seemed ripe for the chopping block.

Work-Life Balance is Overrated via @neiltyson @time #startup #entrepreneur #creative

Source: Wikipedia

It's hard not to think about work-life balance, especially if you're in the U.S. where very few vacations are taken (and if you're reading blog posts like this one reminding you ;).  So we found this article refreshing quoting Star Talk Radio (a fantastic podcast) host Neil deGrasse Tyson stating work-life balance is overrated.

Our favorite part:

“When something is out of balance you can get quite innovative in your attempts to resolve that fact.”

Team of Scientists Find Physical Differences in Empathetic Brains via @IFLScience #learn #interesting

1:00 PM 0 Comments

Recent studies have unveiled more about the brain, and as you can expect, it is fascinating and tells us something about our emotional selves.

This article shows how the brains of empathetic people are different from other brains.  We might be the kind that tears up when watching Grey's Anatomy...but it's not our fault, it's our empathetic brains!

Our favorite part:

“People who are high on affective empathy are often those who get quite fearful when watching a scary movie, or start crying during a sad scene,” explained Robert Eres, who co-authored the study. “Those who have high cognitive empathy are those who are more rational, for example a clinical psychologist counselling a client.”

One small study on whether we're more productive with more vacation via @HarvardBiz #startup #smallbiz #entrepreneur

1:00 PM 0 Comments

Did Tim really get more done when he got back from vacation, or did it take him twice as long to get back into the flow of things?

We look forward to more studies being done that will put to rest the age-old debate of whether more paid vacation days correlate strongly with more efficiency, and in that vein, here is an article about a very small sample study that tackled that question head-on.

Our favorite part:

So while our particular study did not find that having more vacation reduced stress, we do see evidence that it results in greater productivity at work all the same. In other words, it’s not that taking a break will refresh your brain and let you get more done; it’s that simply spending less time at your desk forces you to waste less time.

How humans are pushing the earth toward its sixth mass extinction via @guardian #green #environment #sustainableenergy

1:00 PM 0 Comments

As a species, we are causing irreparable harm to the earth and other living organisms.  The Guardian did this eye-opening piece recently, and we felt compelled to share.   If you scroll to the bottom, you can also see the other extinctions earth has sustained in it's young life.

Our favorite part:

In all, our single species now commandeers somewhere between 25% and 40% of primary productivity on Earth. It is a productivity, that over large areas of land, is “hyper-fertilised” by the extraction of millions of tons of nitrogen from the air, in the Haber-Bosch process, and by digging comparable amounts of phosphate from the ground.
These super-fed crops are fed, highly efficiently, to farm animals, that we eat in turn. The scale of this operation is a large reason for the scale of the ongoing mass extinction of other organisms.

Repurposing old chests and other furniture for bedrooms via @refinery #diy #green #lifehack

1:00 PM 0 Comments

Repurposing is the art of looking at something and creatively applying it to another complimentary solution.  We know an attorney here in NYC that's turn empty Tazo boxes into key-holders, and another urban dweller that planted basil in old (but very cool looking) ripped boots instead of regular plant pots.   It's all the rage, and in that spirit, here is a brief article showing furniture repurposed for bedrooms.

10 Simple Content Marketing Hacks via @marketingland #startup #lifehack #marketing

1:00 PM 0 Comments

Content marketing - the latest must-do in every small business and startup's daily business regimen.   From testing placement of content blocks to photos to smaller details like sub-headers, a business owner can easily get overwhelmed with all the latest optimization advice.

Here's an article about 10 simple content marketing hacks that can cut down on some of the chaos.

Our favorite part:

Upworthy’s editorial process makes writers come up with 25 headlines for every content piece — 25!! That’s no joke. They understand that the first title isn’t always the best, and ideas will organically arise in the process of hammering out many. Plus, they combine this strategy with testing — i.e., find out which title actually draws in the most readers, rather than relying on best guesses.

How to learn more while you sleep via @Entrepreneur #startup #lifehack #bartersugar

1:00 PM 0 Comments

Wouldn't life be a bit more manageable if we could learn while we sleep?  Well, not exactly the way you might think, but as this article points out, there are a few different tricks to learning more while we're awake that allows the brain to cement more knowledge as we sleep.

Our favorite part:

Some of the subjects were exposed to a subtle, artificial, odour as they played, and Diekelmann then wafted the same scent into their noses as they slept. Brain scans showed that these subjects had greater communication between the hippocampus and several cortical areas, compared to those without the cue – just the kind of activity that should lead to enhanced memory consolidation. Sure enough, those subjects remembered about 84% of the object locations when they awoke, while a control group remembered just 61%.

How To Set Off Fireworks via @Deadspin #4thofjuly #independenceday #happyindependenceday

10:00 AM 0 Comments

We're going to let this post do all the talking as we are not knowledgable in the area of fireworks.

Our favorite part:

First, find out when and where your state sells fireworks. For example: In New Jersey, recreational fireworks are banned completely. In Vermont, you can only light off the littlest fireworks, like sparklers. Down in Texas, the state where I personally have blown the most stuff up, you can only buy fireworks for the two weeks leading up to the Fourth of July, and during the last 10 days of the year. From there, you can set them off pretty much wherever, provided you’re outside city limits and there isn’t a burn ban in the area you’re in.

Hope you have a BBQ, relaxing, fireworks filled 4th of July!

Sincerely,

The BarterSugar Team
